Colorado Bureau of Investigation Identity Theft

What Can You Do If You Become a Victim?

First and foremost, you need to act quickly. It is important to maintain a log of all contacts you make to include: date, time, name of organization, telephone number, name of the person you talked to, and a very brief summary of what was said.

Report the crime to your local police or with the police in the community where the identity theft took place, and either get a copy of your police report or your case number. Most credit card companies, banks, and others may ask you for it in order to make sure a crime has actually occurred.
