•The new Concealed Weapon Permit law, Senate Bill 03-24, effective May 18, 2003, requires Colorado Sheriffs to issue permits to individuals who meet the statutory requirements. In accordance with SB03-24, all applications will be submitted through your local sheriff’s office.

•The primary responsibility of the CBI is to conduct the background check, in accordance with appropriate Federal and State law, on behalf of your local Sheriff’s agency.

•The CBI does not issue concealed carry weapon permits: only your local sheriff’s agency has the authority to do so. Questions relating to the issuance of CCW permits should be directed to your local Sheriff’s office, since there may be slight variances in fees and procedures.

Information regarding Firearm purchases by CCW Permit holders

• According to the Federal Firearms Regulation Reference Guide, the identification document presented by the purchaser must have a photo of the purchaser, name, address, and date of birth, and must be issued by a governmental entity for the purpose of identification of individuals. (e.g. Drivers License) Currently, Colorado Concealed Weapons permits do not constitute a valid ID for the purposes of the firearms background check. However, a Colorado Concealed Weapons permit with a current address may be used to establish residence when the valid ID does not.

•At this time, Colorado Concealed Weapon permits do not meet all the criteria to qualify for an exemption to the background check. That means even if you have a Colorado Concealed Weapon permit you must have a new background check every time you purchase a firearm. Out of state Concealed Weapons permit holders also need a background check to purchase a firearm in Colorado.
